Is this thing on?

How to keep this short, sweet, authentic and move this thing forward? How to capture the last couple years? What to say that's not already been said? Life is still a challenge. COVID is still here. More disruption was unveiled. And, writing through this still helps. Had a couple good conversations today; some baubles of note -- 1. Having rooting disciplines is clutch -- e.g. morning meditations, workouts, walks -- ways to help bring the body into the here and now and shake anxiety. Shake off what's unnecessary healthily and sustainably, so what remains is what matters. 2. Doing a walking tour with trusted folks to share ideas -- e.g. starting a new venture; or facing a challenge -- is smart. It grounds speaking on the real topics and opens space for collaboration to the best solution beyond a one brain answer. Diversity of perspective brings depth of vision. 3. Evolution -- give things time. Patience. Though much stays the same [grateful earth still goes around the sun], give some things a couple of years with intention -- watch them morph in spectacular ways. Water, sunlight, air. Work Well Groups is now an LLC offering three services. It's been gestating for a long time and this is a great space to share it's blossoming wip. 1. Leaders of companies are having challenges authentically leading through volatility. Honestly, all things considered, I have a depth of empathy that surprises me. How to take care of the Profit and Loss bottom line AND take care of people? I've run along many leaders, some founder/CEO's of companies, and I want to help them see the opportunities that come out of this time, and with values intact, be present, proactive and reasonable with employees in ways that keep them whole. It's the hardest part of running an enterprise, but probably the most key. 2. Emerging leaders are feeling the burn of hitting KPIs for their team, proving themselves AND leading others. I get it -- and with support, you can find your authentic way forward. Gaining your team's trust will lift and amplify your efforts, but you will have to do things differently than when you were an independent contributor if you want 1+1 = 5. And that certainly is the ask of clients, CEO's and your own direct reports who want career advancement and pay to come out of the client deliverable work. It's doable, but you're going to need to sharpen your people practice. I can help. 3. Human Resources, HRBPs, People Leaders -- we've been hit hard. Yes, recruiting function was slashed. Yes, we're all reeling from managing and leading through COVID/return to office, Salary Transparency, SCOTUS decision on Roe vs Wade, a recession, war, climate change, violence against AAPI and school shootings. It's been a lot; and very heavy -- and we've been lightening rods for organizations. How do we take care of ourselves, be the architects and designers of the employee experience; partner with leaders and empathize with frontline workers? Afterall, we are employees too. Well, I did it, and I can share my practice with you as you amplify yours. Truth -- 2023 will bring her own disruption and challenges. Get resilient, get ready. To be honest, I'm stoked. I'm built for this. Let's get at it in 2023 and thrive.

A Profitable Man

How do you define a successful life? I think, post-holidays, this idea of what this year should be comes to mind. What if it's in the quality of sleep each night, and the love you enjoy from those closest to you? What if any profit is really from having enough time, money, and other stuff to enjoy the love around you? Then, how do the actions you take this year, this month, this week align with that vision you have for yourself as a viable human being and then your career? Reminder: we spend the most time at work. How does work time move the dial forward for the total being of you. If it goes against, it detracts from what you want to be in the world. Is that a worthy sacrifice? Challenge. Write about it this year. Talk with trusted friends. If you need to adjust the work you do: mold the current work, find a new position within the current organization, or seek new frontiers, do it, for life is short and the years they roll along quickly. Happy New Year. Live and Work ...

I came home HAPPY tonight

Life will never be perfect. I left the office today with a pile of "to-do" on my desk that makes my head spin. And yet, I carved out time today to do the following: 1. have a powerful yet shortened work out this morning that cleared my head and got my blood pumping. When I hit the office this morning, I hit it hard and strong, muscling through an anxiety of mammoth proportion about how I was going to get ANYTHING on my plate done. 2. pause and do networking at an industry conference. That raised my sights, beyond my little desk and day to day concerns and showed me the bigger picture. Seeing folks at a career fair quickly snapped me back to reality: I'm lucky to have a job I love in the industry I am most fond of, and in the function I care deeply about, working with people on my team I love and with colleagues to serve whom I respect. Bollywog that it's overwhelming: I'll find healthy, collaborative ways to slog through this period. 3. I managed my netw...

Writing through this

i will be ok this is so scary -- towards the end of the work day, i found out from my brother that San Francisco is going into almost lockdown. and David and I finished up the essential work items and took a break to get groceries for 2 weeks. NYC could be next. we're now prepared but worried about how this will impact our lives. we both treasure exercise -- cycling, long walks -- what if all that is essentially curbed? we came back, i took care of work pop ups and now am back to my personal life. i'm learning about this work from home thing that can take over all the hours in a paranoid panic of overdoing. i'm learning to slow down after the work day. allow the sunset to be the curtain to a focus on work and doing, and to shift to relax, let go, release the day. this will pass. we will be ok. we do the best we can and let go. the rest is up to something larger than all of us.
